Foundation Level is where most testers start, and it's the certification that appears most often when ISTQB shows up in Pakistani job postings or in requirements from international clients. The current version, CTFL v4.0.1 (updated in 2023), reflects how software gets built today: agile delivery, continuous integration, shift-left testing, and DevOps environments.
The exam is 40 multiple-choice questions. Standard time is 60 minutes. The pass mark is 65%, which is 26 correct answers out of 40. If English is not your first language, you can request 25% extended time at no additional charge, which brings the exam to 75 minutes. There are no prerequisites of any kind for Foundation Level. It is open to anyone, whether you're new to testing, working as a developer alongside QA teams, or transitioning into software quality from another role.
Foundation Level certification is valid for life. There is no expiry and no renewal requirement.
