ISTQB Certification in Australia

Exam format, costs, test center locations across every major Australian city, and how to register. Globally valid certification. Locally available.

If you've been job hunting in Australian tech lately, you've probably noticed ISTQB showing up in job ads with real frequency. SEEK has dozens of active QA roles listing it as a requirement or preference right now, across financial services in Sydney, government IT in Canberra, and tech companies across Melbourne and Brisbane. (Source: SEEK ISTQB jobs Australia.) This page covers what the certification involves, what it actually costs in Australia, where you can sit the exam, and how to register for ISTQB in Australia through AT*SQA. If you want the broader picture on the certification scheme first, read what ISTQB is and how it works.

Australia's Tech Market and Why ISTQB Matters Here

Australia's tech sector contributes $134 billion to national GDP and employs more than one million workers, roughly one in every twelve working Australians. (Source: ACS Australia's Digital Pulse 2025.) The ACS projects that number climbing to 1.48 million by 2035, which means Australia needs to bring roughly 52,000 new tech workers into the market every year between now and then.

That growth creates a real headache for hiring teams. They need fast, reliable ways to tell who actually knows their stuff. ISTQB became the testing industry's answer to that problem. And it's not just employers using it as a box to tick. The ACS's own research found that 41% of Australian business leaders now consider industry certifications more effective indicators of tech worker performance than university degrees. (Source: ACS Digital Pulse 2025.) When 150,000 businesses are reporting significant digital skills shortages, a verifiable credential like ISTQB does actual work on your CV.

The demand lands where you'd expect it. Sydney's financial services sector. Canberra's government IT contractors. Melbourne's enterprise software and consulting firms. And Brisbane, where Queensland's tech workforce is set to more than double to 360,000 by 2035 as the 2032 Olympic Games accelerate investment across the state. (Source: ACS Queensland Digital Pulse 2025.) In all of those markets, a tester who can point to a verified, globally recognised credential has a genuine edge.

ISTQB Foundation Level in Australia

Foundation Level, currently version 4.0.1, is the entry point into the ISTQB scheme and the cert that appears most in Australian job ads. Before you can sit any Advanced or Specialist certification, you need it. The 2023 revision of the syllabus updated it to reflect the way most Australian teams actually work right now: Agile delivery, DevOps pipelines, shift-left testing, and continuous integration are all in there.

The exam is 40 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes. If English isn't your first language and you're sitting in English, apply for the 75-minute extension when you register. The pass mark is 65%, which works out to 26 correct answers out of 40. There's no negative marking, so answer everything even when you're not sure. (Source: AT*SQA pricing and exam FAQ.) No prerequisites, no degree required. The certification is valid for life once you pass.

Most people take four to six weeks to prepare, putting in an hour or two a day. If you've been in QA for a few years you'll cover familiar ground quickly, but you'll still need focused time on ISTQB's specific vocabulary and the Chapter 4 test design application questions. The syllabus is free from AT*SQA's educational resources page and it's the primary study document. For a chapter-by-chapter preparation plan, see the full Foundation Level study guide.

Foundation Level is a prerequisite for almost every Advanced and Specialist certification in the scheme, including Test Automation Engineer, Test Management, AI Testing, and Agile Testing. Getting it done now keeps your options open for whatever direction your testing career goes next. See how hard the Foundation Level exam actually is.

Why Register Through AT*SQA

AT*SQA is a non-profit and an accredited ISTQB exam provider. The certification you earn is globally valid, identical to one earned through any other accredited provider. Where AT*SQA differs is what they include with every purchase, eight extras that no other ISTQB provider bundles in.

  • A free micro-credential exam. Every ISTQB purchase includes a complimentary micro-credential of your choice: API Testing, AI for Testers, Test Automation, DevOps Testing, and more. Two credentials for the price of one. See what's included.
  • Practice exams matched to AT*SQA's question style. Generic ISTQB practice questions are everywhere online, but they weren't written for AT*SQA's specific exam format. AT*SQA provides two exclusive Foundation Level practice exams built to match how their actual questions are constructed, right down to how the wrong-answer choices are phrased. Available on the educational resources page.
  • ISTQB Successful Candidate Register listing. AT*SQA adds you to the global SCR, the database employers use to verify ISTQB credentials. In Australian banking, government contracting, and consulting, verification is often a formal part of the hiring or contract vetting process. Being on the register makes that instant.
  • US visibility for Australian testers. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Canva, and dozens of other US-headquartered companies run major Australian operations. AT*SQA can list you on the Official US List of Certified Testers, a searchable database US employers use to find and verify testers. No other ISTQB provider outside the US can offer this.
  • AT*Work and AT*Consult directories. AT*Work is a searchable list employers use to find certified testers open to work. AT*Consult is the equivalent directory for testing consultancies. Both are optional and free to join.
  • 365-day voucher validity and flexible scheduling. No pressure to schedule the moment you buy. Your voucher stays active for a full year. Online exams can be rescheduled free if you do it more than 24 hours before the appointment. Testing center exams can be rescheduled free if you do it more than 72 hours before the appointment.
  • Volume discounts for teams. Organisations certifying a group get automatic 10% discounts at 20 or more vouchers. Higher volume pricing available by contacting AT*SQA directly at atsqa.org/contact.
  • Testing Tiers ranking points. Each cert you earn through AT*SQA adds to your Testing Tiers ranking, which lifts your visibility in the AT*Work directory and the US Official List.

The Free Micro-Credential for Australian Testers

Every ISTQB purchase through AT*SQA comes with a free micro-credential exam. You pick the topic. These are short, focused certifications that sit alongside your ISTQB qualification on your CV and prove a specific skill. A few of them are particularly well-matched to what Australian employers are asking for right now:

  • API Testing: one of the most consistently required skills in Australian QA job postings. Covers REST, gRPC, GraphQL, and test planning and design. More on why API testing is so in demand.
  • AI for Testers: covers how AI-based systems behave and how to test them. 86% of Australian businesses support employees using generative AI tools at work (Source: Datacom survey via ACS Information Age), and the ACS Digital Pulse 2024 found 5.4 million Australians are already using generative AI at work. Testers who understand how to test AI-based systems are ahead of the curve.
  • Test Automation: principles, tools, and implementation. Relevant for any Australian tester working in a team that runs CI/CD pipelines, which is most teams in 2026.
  • DevOps Testing: testing in DevOps and continuous delivery environments. Pairs well with the ISTQB Test Automation Engineer certification if that's your next step.

The Official US List: Why It Matters for Australian Testers

Here's something most Australian testers don't know about registering through AT*SQA, and it's genuinely useful if you work with US-based companies.

When you earn your ISTQB certification through AT*SQA, you can be listed on the Official US List of Certified and Credentialed Software Testers. This is a searchable public database that US employers use to find and verify certified testers. No other ISTQB provider outside the United States can list you here, not BCS in the UK, not iSQI in Germany, not anyone. AT*SQA can do it because AT*SQA is the exam provider for ASTQB, the American Software Testing Qualifications Board.

For a lot of Australian testers, this matters more than it might initially seem. Australia has enormous US tech presence. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Canva, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and many others run major Australian operations. If you work for one of those companies, your American colleagues and US-based hiring managers can verify your credential in a system they already know and trust. That's a small but real advantage in a job process. And if you're ever thinking about a move to the US, a remote role for a US company, or a transfer through your current employer, you're already in the right database before you start looking.

Listing is optional. You choose whether to appear, and there's no extra cost. It just takes a tick during the post-exam process with AT*SQA. For anyone working inside a US-headquartered Australian organisation, it's worth doing.

The US Official List is searchable by employers at atsqa.org/certified-testers. Only AT*SQA can list you there. No other ISTQB exam provider in the world offers this to candidates outside the US.

After You Pass

Online exam results come through immediately. You know the moment you finish. Your ISTQB certificate shows up in your AT*SQA account within 24 hours. Foundation Level is valid for life with no renewal needed.

First thing to do after passing: log in and claim your free micro-credential. You pick the topic. For most Australian testers in 2026, the API Testing or AI for Testers options are going to land best on a resume given what SEEK postings are asking for. Browse all available micro-credentials here.

Next, get yourself on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register. AT*SQA handles this during the post-exam process. In Australia's banking, financial services, and government IT sectors, employers often verify credentials as part of hiring or contract vetting. Being on the SCR makes that instant. And if you work with US-headquartered companies, opt into the Official US List of Certified and Credentialed Software Testers at the same time. It's optional, there's no extra cost, and it's the one thing no other ISTQB provider can offer you.

Frequently Asked Questions: ISTQB in Australia

  • Can I take the ISTQB exam online from Australia?
Yes, and it's how most Australian candidates sit it. You need a webcam, a stable internet connection, and a reasonably quiet spot. The proctor does a quick environment check before you start. Results are instant and your certificate shows up in your AT*SQA account within 24 hours of passing. Check the AT*SQA online exam page for the full technical requirements before your sitting day.
  • Where are the ISTQB test centers in Australia?
Through AT*SQA there are two in Perth (St Georges Terrace and Hay Street), two in Adelaide (CBD and Thebarton), two in Melbourne (Lonsdale and Flinders Street), one in Canberra, and three in the Sydney area: Haymarket, Kensington, and Parramatta. Brisbane and Darwin also have locations. Addresses and hours can change, so always check with the Kryterion locator before booking anything.
  • How much does ISTQB Foundation Level cost in Australia?
$229 USD through AT*SQA, which your card converts to AUD at checkout. That gets you a 365-day voucher and a free micro-credential exam of your choice included. For the full list across all ISTQB certifications, see the ISTQB exam cost page or go straight to atsqa.org/purchase.
  • Is the ISTQB certification from AT*SQA recognised by Australian employers?
Yes. ISTQB certifications are globally recognised regardless of which accredited provider you sit through. What you earn through AT*SQA is the same credential as one earned anywhere else in the world. AT*SQA lists you on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register, which is the global verification database Australian employers check when they want to confirm a credential. See the AT*SQA Australia registration page for full details.
  • How long does it take to prepare for ISTQB Foundation Level?
Realistically, 40 to 60 hours over four to six weeks. If you've been doing QA work for a few years, a lot of the material will feel familiar and you'll move faster. If you're newer to testing, give yourself the full six weeks. The syllabus is free at AT*SQA's educational resources page and it's your primary study document. For a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of what to focus on, see the Foundation Level study guide.
  • What is the ISTQB Foundation Level exam format?
40 multiple-choice questions and 60 minutes to answer them. If English isn't your first language and you're sitting in English, you can apply for a 75-minute extension when you register. The pass mark is 65%, which is 26 correct out of 40. No negative marking, so don't leave anything blank. See the AT*SQA pricing and exam FAQ for more on the exam structure.
  • What if I fail the exam?
You'll need a new voucher. The original is used up the moment you sit, regardless of how it went. Before you buy a new one at full price, check the AT*SQA specials page. Discounted retake pricing is available on some exams. Most people who don't pass the first time dropped points in one or two specific chapters rather than right across the board. Work out where and focus your prep there. The second round is almost always shorter than the first. See the ISTQB FAQ for first-timers for more advice.
  • Can I use an overseas ISTQB certification in Australia?
Yes. The ISTQB credential is the same globally, regardless of which accredited provider issued it. If it's on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register, any Australian employer can verify it. If you earned your cert through another provider and want to add a new one through AT*SQA, you'll also get the option to appear on the Official US List, which is worth doing if you work with any US-based companies.
  • I've just arrived in Australia. Can I register through AT*SQA?
Yes, and you can do it from day one. AT*SQA is a global provider and there's no residency requirement. You sit online from home or at one of the test centers listed on this page. Your certification is valid worldwide and for life. AT*SQA will add you to the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register and, if you opt in, the Official US List, which is useful if you're joining a company with US operations or clients. Head to atsqa.org/purchase to get started.
