If you're a software tester in Canada, you've probably already seen ISTQB showing up in job postings. This page covers the practical side of getting certified: which certifications are available, what they cost in Canada, where you can sit the exam, and why registering through AT*SQA gives you more than just the exam itself. For a broader look at how the whole certification scheme works, see what ISTQB is and how it works.
What Is ISTQB and Why Does It Matter in Canada?
ISTQB stands for International Software Testing Qualifications Board. It's the organization behind what has become the most widely held software testing certification in the world, with over one million certificates across more than 130 countries. That reach is a big part of why it matters: a tester in Toronto, a QA lead in Berlin, and a test manager in Singapore all working from the same ISTQB foundation share a common vocabulary and a common standard. That's genuinely useful on distributed teams, and it's why international companies actively look for it.
In Canada, you'll find it in job postings across banking, government, healthcare, and tech. And increasingly it's listed as required rather than preferred, not something that helps you stand out, but something you need to be considered at all. Canadian companies with international teams tend to value it especially, because the credential is based on the same syllabus their colleagues abroad already hold.

One thing many Canadian candidates don't realize: you're not limited to any single national provider. Any ISTQB-accredited exam provider can issue your certification, and the credential you receive is exactly the same regardless of who you register with. It's the same exam, the same pass score, the same globally recognized certificate.
How to Get ISTQB Certified in Canada
Here's how it works when you register through AT*SQA, which is open to candidates anywhere in Canada.
-
Choose your certification
New to ISTQB? Start with
Foundation Level. It's the prerequisite for almost everything else in the scheme, and it's where most testers begin regardless of their experience level. Already certified at Foundation? Pick the specialization that matches your current role or where you want to go next.
-
Create your AT*SQA account
Head to
atsqa.org/account/create and set up your account. You'll need it to access study materials, manage your voucher, and schedule your exam when you're ready.
-
Purchase your exam voucher
Go to
atsqa.org/purchase and pick your exam. Prices are in USD and Stripe Adaptive Pricing converts to CAD at checkout automatically. The voucher gives you 365 days from purchase to actually sit the exam, so there's no pressure to schedule before you're ready.
-
Prepare using official materials
Pull the official ISTQB syllabus from the
AT*SQA educational resources page. It's free. For Foundation Level and several other exams, AT*SQA also has additional practice exams written to match their specific question style. That distinction matters: generic ISTQB practice questions exist all over the internet, but they're not written to match how AT*SQA phrases and structures their exams.
-
Schedule and take your exam
Log in and schedule from your account. You can sit online from home or pick a
Kryterion test center near you. If something comes up, online exams can be rescheduled free of charge if you do it more than 24 hours before the appointment. Testing center exams can be rescheduled free of charge if you do it more than 72 hours before the appointment. Online exam results are instant, and your certificate appears in your AT*SQA account within 24 hours of passing.

ISTQB Foundation Level in Canada
Foundation Level is where most testers start and where the demand is highest. It's the prerequisite for nearly every other ISTQB certification, and it's the qualification that shows up most in Canadian job postings. The current version is CTFL v4.0.1, updated in 2023 to reflect how software actually gets built today: agile teams, DevOps pipelines, shift-left testing, and continuous delivery.
The exam itself is 40 multiple-choice questions. Standard time is 60 minutes and you need 65% to pass, which works out to 26 correct answers out of 40. If you are taking the exam in a non-native language, you get 25% extra time, which brings it to 75 minutes. There are no prerequisites. You don't need a degree, a testing background, or any prior certification. The Foundation Level is genuinely open to anyone, and a lot of people who pass it come from adjacent roles: developers who work alongside QA teams, business analysts, project coordinators, and career changers entering tech.
Foundation Level certification is valid for life once earned. There's no expiry date and no renewal requirement for CTFL. If you go on to earn Advanced or Expert certifications, those have different validity rules, but the Foundation credential stays on your record permanently.
Preparation typically takes four to eight weeks studying an hour or two a day, though that varies considerably. Testers already working in QA often find the material familiar and move through it faster. People newer to testing benefit from taking the full time. The CTFL v4.0.1 syllabus is free to download and is your primary study resource. AT*SQA also provides extra practice exams built to match their exam's question style, which is worth using in the final week before you sit.

What You Get When You Register Through AT*SQA
AT*SQA is a non-profit, and the ISTQB certification you get through them is the same globally valid credential you'd get from any accredited provider. What's different is what comes with it. Here's what AT*SQA includes that you won't find everywhere:
-
Free micro-credential exam with every ISTQB purchase
Buy any ISTQB exam through AT*SQA and you'll get a free micro-credential voucher alongside it. You pick the topic: API testing, AI for Testers, Test Automation, DevOps Testing, and more are on the list. It's a useful way to add a second credential without paying for a second exam. See the free micro-credential offer details.
-
Extra practice exams matched to AT*SQA's exam style
A lot of ISTQB practice material online was written for a different provider's format. AT*SQA's extra practice exams are built to match how their questions are actually phrased and structured. For Foundation Level in particular, that's worth using before exam day. Find them on the educational resources page.
-
Career visibility through AT*Work™ and AT*Consult
Once you're certified, AT*SQA gives you two optional visibility tools. AT*Work™ is a directory where employers can find testers who are open to work. AT*Consult does the same for consultants and QA services companies. Neither is mandatory, but both are useful if you're actively looking or trying to build a consulting practice. Both are available to testers in Canada.
-
365-day voucher validity and free reschedule
Your voucher is valid for 365 days from purchase, which means you're not forced to schedule before you're ready. Need to push your exam date? Online exams can be rescheduled free if you do it more than 24 hours in advance. Testing center exams can be rescheduled free if you do it more than 72 hours in advance. Inside those windows, fees apply.

ISTQB Successful Candidate Register listing
Pass your exam and you can be added to the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register, the public database employers worldwide use to verify ISTQB credentials. Recruiters and hiring managers can look up your certification directly rather than taking your word for it.

What Happens After You Pass
For online proctored exams, results are instant. You'll know immediately whether you passed. Your certificate then appears in your AT*SQA account within 24 hours of completing the exam.
After you pass, AT*SQA can add you to the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register, the global public database employers use to verify ISTQB credentials. If a hiring manager or recruiter wants to confirm your certification, they can look you up there directly.
Foundation Level certification is valid for life with no renewal required. Advanced Level certifications follow the same rule. Expert Level certifications are valid for seven years and require renewal, but that only applies if you reach Expert level. For most candidates registering their first ISTQB certification, the credential you earn is permanent.
Once certified, you can also activate the optional career visibility tools included with AT*SQA. AT*Work™ lets employers find you if you're open to roles or contracts. AT*Consult lists QA consultants and testing services companies. Neither requires anything after you pass, they're there when you want them.
Is ISTQB Certification Worth It in Canada?
Short answer: yes. But the longer answer depends on what kind of work you're doing and where you want to go. In 2026, ISTQB continues to show up as a requirement or preferred qualification in Canadian QA job postings across every major sector. IT services firms like CGI and DXC Technology Canada list it in active QA postings. Professional services firms like KPMG Canada include it in quality engineering roles. Scotiabank QA Analyst roles appear in ISTQB-filtered job searches on Indeed.ca. Across Canadian banking, government, healthcare, and enterprise software, the pattern is the same: ISTQB is the baseline credential hiring teams recognize. The ISTQB Successful Candidate Register gives employers a way to verify your certification directly, which matters when you're applying to organizations that have a formal verification step in their hiring process.
The global software testing and QA services market is projected to grow from $50.6 billion in 2025 to $107.2 billion by 2032, driven largely by increasing software complexity, API-first architectures, and AI adoption. Testers with formal credentials are better positioned to grow with the market than those without.

Frequently Asked Questions: ISTQB in Canada
-
Is ISTQB recognized in Canada?
Widely, yes. You'll find it in job postings across banking, federal government, healthcare, tech, and consulting. It's the most commonly listed QA certification in Canada, and because it's based on an international standard, the credential is just as valid in the UK, Germany, or Australia as it is here. Whatever provider you register through, the certificate itself is the same.
-
Can I take the ISTQB exam online from home in Canada?
You can. Online proctoring is available across all of Canada, including smaller cities and remote areas. You'll need a computer with a webcam, a decent internet connection, and somewhere reasonably quiet. Before you book, it's worth reading through
AT*SQA's online exam page so you know exactly what the proctor will check on the day.
-
How much does ISTQB Foundation Level cost in Canada?
Foundation Level is $229 USD through AT*SQA. Stripe Adaptive Pricing converts that to CAD automatically at checkout, so there's nothing you need to do on your end. The voucher is good for 365 days from purchase, and it comes with a free micro-credential exam bundled in.
-
How long does it take to get ISTQB certified in Canada?
Studying for Foundation Level, most people put in four to eight weeks at a couple of hours a day. That's a rough average and it shifts quite a bit depending on your background. If you've been working in QA for a few years, the material will feel familiar and you might move faster. If you're coming in cold, give yourself more time. Once you buy your voucher, you've got 365 days to sit the exam, so there's no reason to rush the prep. Online exam results are instant, and your certificate appears in your AT*SQA account within 24 hours of passing.
-
Is ISTQB worth it in Canada?
For most Canadian testers, yes. The clearest case is if you're working in banking, government, or any regulated industry where it's showing up as a requirement in job postings. It's also worth it if you're working remotely for US or international clients, since appearing on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register and the AT*SQA certified testers list gives employers a way to verify your credential without taking your word for it. Where it matters less is in small startup environments where the hiring manager cares mainly about what you can demonstrate, not what you can prove on paper.
-
Do I need a prerequisite to take ISTQB Foundation Level?
None at all for Foundation Level. No degree, no prior testing experience, no prerequisites of any kind. Most Advanced Level certifications do require Foundation first, which is part of why it makes sense to start there regardless of where you eventually want to go in the scheme.
-
What study materials are available for ISTQB candidates in Canada?
The official ISTQB syllabus and glossary are free to download from the
AT*SQA educational resources page. The syllabus is your primary study material. For Foundation Level, AT*SQA also has extra practice exams that are written to match how their questions are actually structured, which is worth using alongside the generic sample exams. The ISTQB sample questions that float around online tend to be formatted differently and won't give you an accurate feel for what AT*SQA's exam is like.
-
Can I pay for my ISTQB exam in Canadian dollars?
Prices are listed in USD and Stripe Adaptive Pricing converts the amount to CAD automatically at checkout. You don't need to do anything differently. If you're buying for a group or your organization needs an invoice, reach out to AT*SQA directly through
atsqa.org/contact and they can work through the details with you.
-
What if I fail my ISTQB exam?
You'll need to purchase a new voucher to sit the exam again. The original voucher is consumed when you take the exam regardless of the result, so a retake means a new registration. That said, AT*SQA offers discounted retake pricing on certain exams, so check the
specials page before buying. Most candidates find that reviewing the areas where they lost marks and using AT*SQA's practice exams before the retake makes a significant difference.
-
How many questions is the ISTQB Foundation Level exam?
40 multiple-choice questions. Standard time is 60 minutes. If you are taking the exam in a non-native language, you get 25% extra time, which is 75 minutes. The pass mark is 65%, which means 26 correct answers out of 40. The exam is based on the ISTQB Foundation Level v4.0.1 syllabus and tests at three cognitive levels: recall, comprehension, and application. There's no negative marking, so answering every question is always better than leaving one blank.
-
Can my employer pay for my ISTQB exam in Canada?
Yes, and this is quite common in Canadian banking, consulting, and government. AT*SQA handles group purchases and can work with organizations directly on invoicing. If you're hoping your employer will cover the cost, it helps to come to that conversation with the specifics: $229 USD for Foundation Level, volume discounts available for groups, and the cert is valid for life so it's a one-time expense. Reach out to AT*SQA through
atsqa.org/contact to set up group registration.
-
Is the ISTQB Foundation Level exam harder in Canada than in other countries?
No. ISTQB exams are globally standardized. The CTFL v4.0.1 syllabus, the question format, the pass mark, and the exam structure are exactly the same whether you sit in Toronto, London, Sydney, or Dubai. There's no Canadian-specific version. If you're registered through AT*SQA, you're taking the same exam as AT*SQA candidates in any other country.
