The ISTQB Foundation Level is the world's most popular software testing certification. Plenty of testers have prepared for it and passed it over the years. A number have also sat the exam under-prepared and failed. The difference is almost always preparation for the exam.
This page covers what the exam tests, how long to study, and where candidates tend to lose points to make sure that you pass your exam on your first try.
What Is the Exam Structure?
The syllabus covers six chapters:
- Ch 1 Fundamentals of Testing
- Ch 2 Testing Throughout the SDLC
- Ch 3 Static Testing
- Ch 4 Test Analysis and Design
- Ch 5 Managing the Test Activities
- Ch 6 Test Tools
Question difficulty is broken into three different levels:
K1
Remember
Recall a definition or term
K2
Understand
Classify or explain a concept
K3
Apply
Apply a concept to a real scenario. These are the hardest questions.
K3 questions are the hardest for most candidates. They require applying ISTQB's specific framework to a situation, not just recognizing a definition. The answer that matches the ISTQB syllabus framework is always the correct one, even if it differs from what you would do on the job.

What Does the Exam Test?
Reading the syllabus one time is not enough. The exam tests whether you can work with ISTQB's terminology and apply its concepts, not whether you have read the document and know a few definitions. However, you still need to know and understand ISTQB definitions.
ISTQB uses precise definitions that differ from how some testing teams talk day to day. The ISTQB glossary defines terms like error, defect, failure, fault, and root cause as distinct concepts with specific meanings. Candidates who use these words interchangeably in daily work and do not study the glossary before the exam lose points on questions where that distinction matters.
Chapter 4, Test Analysis and Design, typically carries the most exam weight and requires practice with specific techniques. Chapter 3, Static Testing, is an area in which many candidates under-prepare because they spend most of their study time on test design.
Where Do Candidates Lose Points?
These patterns come up repeatedly among testers who have taken the exam:
-
Terminology gaps
Testers lose points using words interchangeably that ISTQB has distinct definitions for. Studying the ISTQB glossary is crucial to success.
-
Treating K3 questions like K1 questions
A scenario question asks you to apply a technique to a situation. Reading it quickly and picking the familiar-sounding answer is a common mistake. Slow down on K3s.
-
Skipping practice questions
Reading the syllabus shows you the content. Practice questions show you whether you can use it and get you ready for the style of exam questions. AT*SQA provides additional practice exams designed to match the style of the actual exam, distinct from the generic ISTQB sample questions.
-
Running short on time
60 minutes for 40 questions gives you 90 seconds per question on average. Scenario-based K3 questions take longer to read. Candidates who spend too long on individual questions sometimes run out of time on questions they would have answered correctly.
